How can I reduce my heart risk factors. Simple answers to a complex problem

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is one of my top-recommended nutritional supplements for reducing heart risk factors. I simply would not practice cardiology without it.

What exactly is CoQ10? Often called the “miracle nutrient” or the “universal antioxidant,” CoQ10 exists in the mitochondria which are the tiny energy centers in each of our cells. Not only does CoQ10 scavenge and destroys free radicals that cause cardiovascular problems and heart disease, it sparks energy production in every cell of your body including the heart.

One of the Major Benefits of CoQ10 is Increased Energy

The heart is one of the few organs in the body that functions continuously, without resting. Therefore the heart muscle (myocardium) requires the largest level of energetic support of any organ your body. In fact, any condition that causes a decrease in CoQ10 can impair the energetic capacity of the heart, leaving the tissues more susceptible to free radical attack.

Although CoQ10 is produced naturally in the body, production wanes dramatically with age and in the presence of specific diseases. Certain medications, especially cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, can also interfere with CoQ10 production. As your CoQ10 levels decline it can significantly affect how you feel, making you feel less energetic and “older” than you actually are.

 

Refueling Your Body with CoQ10 Can Improve Your Energy Levels, Dramatically

When you supplement with the right CoQ10 dosage, it allows CoQ10 to do its job of sparking the production of your body’s cellular fuel, called adenosine triphosphate (ATP). As your heart muscle consumes huge amounts of oxygen and energy, CoQ10 essentially recharges the energy system in the heart, enabling the heart muscle to pump blood more efficiently. At the same time, CoQ10 cleans up destructive free radicals that are by-products of the energy production process.

When your body is low on CoQ10, it’s like running on weak batteries. Unfortunately, many people write off this feeling as a sign of getting old. They never realize that the real cause of the problem is a CoQ10 deficiency. What is the Best CoQ10 Dosage to Take?

Dietary sources of CoQ10 include beef heart, pork, chicken liver and fish (especially salmon, mackerel and sardines). But the average person gets only 2–5 mg of CoQ10 a day from their diet. Therefore, I’m a firm believer in taking a CoQ10 supplement. Here’s how to determine the right CoQ10 dosage for you.

1. Are you between the ages of 40 and 60?  Your body’s natural production of CoQ10 begins to decline after age 40. So, for healthy people between the ages of 40-60, I recommend a minimum daily dose of 50-100 mg of CoQ10 daily.

2. Are you over 60 or on a cholesterol-lowering statin drug? If that’s the case, I recommend increasing your CoQ10 intake to 100-200 mg daily. The reason is that CoQ10 production continues to decline with age, so after age 60 it’s important to replenish your body’s CoQ10 supply. Plus, statin drugs block the production of CoQ10, so if you’re on a cholesterol-lowering statin drug it’s critical to supplement with CoQ10.

3. Have you had a recent heart surgery, heart attack, or congestive heart failure? If so, I recommend taking 200-300 mg of CoQ10 daily. This is my recommended dosage for using CoQ10 as one of the natural remedies for heart disease.

For the best results, you want to take CoQ10 supplements in divided doses with your meals since it’s more readily absorbed with food (especially some fat).

Occasionally, my patients reported a sense of “too much energy” and a few even said it’s as though they had too much caffeine. Should this occur, just adjust the CoQ10 dosage down to a more comfortable level for you.

For Maximum Effectiveness, You Want to Take CoQ10 with L-Carnitine

While CoQ10 benefits your health by sparking energy within your cells, L-Carnitine is like a shuttle bringing fuel into the heart cells to be burned as energy. I’ve observed some dramatic effects in my patients by teaming up CoQ10 with L-Carnitine.

How much L-Carnitine should you take? I recommend taking 250-500 mg of L-Carnitine three to four times a day. Start at the low end of the dosage scale and work up until you achieve the desired effect. Both L-Carnitine and CoQ10 may require fine tuning to obtain the optimal therapeutic blood level and symptom relief.

Okay - First of all, it is hard to rate supplements since most of us take them for future health benefits or to stay in a reasonable healthy state. I have taken the usual supplements for years - fish oil, garlic, antioxidants, C, D, E, etc. - and it must be doing something good as I am 67 years old and do not take any prescription medications, my BP is always around 110/70, my pulse is always around 60 (I am not an athlete), I have all my teeth and a full head of hair. So, I can't say that any particular supplement has made me youthful or kept me healthy. It is probably a combination of everything that keeps me going. So, then when I look at a supplement, there are other factors besides the main ingredient that help to make it stand our. It has to have the right ingredients and not crappy additives that cancel all my hard work over the years.When it comes to supplements, it is hard to find quality supplements that are made in the USA and don't have crap ingredients like titanium dioxide, stearates, soybean oil (GMO), polysorbates, and the like. Unfortunately, Amazon does not show a list of ingredients on most supplements in their store, so you have to rely on others comments, or buy something and find out after you get it that it has crap ingredients. That is the case with the last bottle of COQ10 I purchased from another brand here on the Amazon store. The product ingredient label was not available. When I received it in the mail, and looked at the ingredients, it had polysorbate 80 listed. Do a google search on "polysorbate 80 health issues" and see how evil this additive is, and it is found in foods, cosmetics, and vitamins.So, why bother with COQ10, anyway? My Review of UbiquinolHi. Let me start by saying that I’m a relatively healthy middle-aged women, and usually only take a multivitamin daily. I’ve heard about the many benefits of CoQ10, but noticed there is very little information on Ubiquinol, which is a non-oxidized, electron rich form of CoQ10. It is the “active form” of CoQ10, but with greater bioavailability which means it gets absorbed directly into the bloodstream and cells for quick absorption and doesn’t need the “conversion process” that’s needed with CQ10. It is found naturally in the mitochondrial cells and contributes to the body’s ability to generate energy.It has many proven benefits such as better cardiovascular health and better circulation throughout the body. It lowers blood pressure and fights chronic disease. It’s also known to be beneficial for oral and gum health. It has been shown to improve memory, and is a powerful antioxidant that reduces or slows signs of aging. This alone sold me on it! Our body makes less of it as we age, which leads to fatigue, muscle weakness and soreness, and other ailments.I think it’s important to note that people who are currently taking statins or cholesterol-lowering drugs are a risk for deficiencies. Statins reduce the blood cholesterol that transports CoQ10 and other fat-soluble antioxidants in your system. As a yoga therapist, I take health and wellness very seriously, and believe that the best way to health and longevity is to be proactive. It can be tough in our society, and I recently found myself bogged down with a lot of stress, like many of us do! I decided to take my health into my own hands and sought out the help of an Integrative Medicine Doctor who did lots of fancy tests, including a blood nutrition panel. What do you know, my coQ10 levels were exceedingly low! While it is not the answer to the whole problem, I figured starting this supplement would help. Even though I'm only 26, because my body has been under a lot of stress, I figured I would give it a break and order ubiquinol instead of ubiquinone. In less than a week I have already noticed the subtle shift! Way more peaceful, calm, high energy levels. Before I was almost frantic when I had high energy, but now it just feels like a good, overall, healthy sense of wellbeing. Thank you!
